So far, so good. However, although AppleScript may put all this power at your fingertips, mastering it all can take a bit of time and effort. The commands AppleScript was given at the factory are few get, set, copy, count, and run so where does the complexity lie Remember that most of the real power of the AppleScript language comes from applications scriptability. Applications have many more commands built into them. Adobe InDesign, for example, has about 80 of its own commands, FileMaker Pro has about 30, and Adobe Photoshop has more than 65 commands. To control scriptable applications, you have to send them commands and to do that you first have to learn what commands each application supports and how to use them correctly.

You might see the terms managed beans and backing beans used interchangeably. They are, in fact, one and the same thing: simply a Java class in which UI-specific methods can be written. Strictly speaking, there are only managed beans. The reason for the two terms is that if a managed bean has a one-to-one mapping with a page and includes methods to access the UI components on that page, then you can think of that managed bean as backing that page hence, a backing bean.

On top of this, scripting additions can define many additional commands that are accessible throughout AppleScript. Mac OS X includes a single general-purpose scripting addition, Standard Additions, as standard. This alone adds several dozen commands for basic tasks such as reading and writing files and displaying simple dialog boxes, and you can add dozens, if not hundreds, more ready-to-use commands by downloading and installing third-party scripting additions available from www.osaxen.com and other AppleScript-related websites. Finally, as you become more experienced in using AppleScript and as your scripts grow larger and more ambitious, you ll find yourself defining your own commands by adding subroutines to your scripts. Subroutines are great tools for organizing complex code so it s easier to understand and use. They also make it easy to reuse common chunks of code in different parts of your script, or even in other scripts.

Commands, even in life, are not just meaningless sentences you throw around. Commands have a purpose: they make things happen. One command may create a new document in TextEdit; another may read some data from a file. A third may play a song in Apple iTunes, and a fourth displays a message onscreen. Other commands may create new files or folders, send e-mails, find and replace parts of a string, perform sophisticated mathematical calculations . . . the list of possibilities is almost endless! So, what makes a successful command To start with, even the simplest of commands needs two things: a name and a target (the object to which the command is sent). Commands can also have parameters (values included in the command that will be given to the command s handler to use), and/or return values as their results. Finally, commands may also generate errors when they run into problems they re unable to deal with themselves.

So what are managed beans Managed beans provide a mechanism to register a Java class in which UI-specific code can be placed. The methods in the class can then be referenced, using Expression Language (EL), from the various trigger points or properties of UI components. These trigger points, called component listeners, might relate to an action, such as when a button is clicked or the value in a field is changed. The configuration details for managed beans are generally registered in the default unbounded task flow file, adfc-config.xml, but can also be registered in any other task flow if required. When a managed bean method is called by a UI component, the framework is responsible for instantiating an instance of the bean, which remains in memory for a specific period of the processing life cycle as defined by its scope.

Every command has a name. When an object receives a command, it checks to see whether it contains a command handler of the same name. If it does, it responds to the command by executing the code in that handler. If not . . . well, we ll discuss what happens then later in the chapter (see the Types of Commands section). A command name may be a keyword defined by a scriptable application, scripting addition, or AppleScript itself, or it may be an AppleScript identifier if it s a user-defined command.
