By default, AppleScript s display dialog command gives you the OK and Cancel buttons. However, you can easily define one, two, or three buttons of your own. To define buttons, you use the buttons parameter followed by a list of button names as strings. Each string will become a button. A list with more than three items will generate an error, and an empty list will prompt AppleScript to use the default OK and Cancel buttons. When running the script in Figure 12-5, the dialog box shown in Figure 12-6 will be displayed. When you click a button in that dialog box, the display dialog command returns a record with a buttoned returned property containing the button s name. For example, the Result area in Figure 12-5 shows the result of clicking the No button.

Just like any other ADF Faces component, the graph you have created has a number of properties that can be used to control various features of the component. For example, the properties 3D Effect and Style can both be used to change the look of the graph, as shown in Figure 16-2.

Figure 12-6. The dialog box with the custom buttons If you use longer names for your buttons, AppleScript will produce a dialog box with wider buttons to try to accommodate your text. In OS X versions prior to Tiger (10.4), all buttons in the dialog box were stretched equally, and the widest button you could have was about 20 characters. In Tiger, buttons are made to fit the size of the button text, which means that if the button titles are longer than a few characters, each button will have its own size. If the titles of all buttons force the dialog box to be wider than 600 pixels, the button titles will get truncated from both ends. You have no way to change the font size or font style of the dialog box. For that kind of control, you need to upgrade your skills to the everything is possible land of AppleScript Studio, FaceSpan, or third-party scripting additions.

What s missing from the dialog box in Figure 12-6 is a button that will execute when the user presses the Return key. This is called the default button. You can turn a button into the default button by passing its name as the default button parameter. Running the script in Figure 12-7 will produce the dialog box shown in Figure 12-8.

The default button parameter can also take an integer from 1 to 3. Specifically, 1 would be the leftmost button in the dialog box. This means to get the same result as shown in Figure 12-8, you could specify the default button as 3 instead of Maybe.

The graph can also be animated using AnimationOnDisplay and MarkerTooltipType, the latter of which can be used to display information as the mouse is moved over a bar, also shown in Figure 16-2. Other properties such as EmptyText can be used to define a message if there is no graph data, and DynamicResize will automatically stretch the graph within its parent container.

Deciding which button is the default one can be important. What you have to assume is that for the most part, people don t read dialog boxes. There s even the saying It s a Mac, just click OK . . . . This aspect of human nature means you should make the default button the button with the least harsh consequences. For instance, the default button in a dialog box that reminds users for the last time that the script is about to erase their hard disk should be the Cancel button, not the OK button.

cancel button, a new parameter to the display dialog command in Tiger, allows you to specify which button is executed when the user presses the Esc or Cmd key. This is useful when you want a button that isn t named Cancel to cancel the dialog box. The script in Figure 12-9 displays a dialog box (shown in Figure 12-10). The dialog box has three buttons, arranged a bit differently this time. Notice that instead of the evenly spaced buttons in the dialog box shown in Figure 12-8, these buttons have been automatically arranged to send a message. The default (Maybe) and cancel (No) buttons are on the right side of the dialog box. For that to happen, you have to specify both the default and cancel buttons, and you have to order them so that the default button is the rightmost button and the cancel button is the second from the right.
